Fun Fly Competition – January 30, 2010 Welcome to the 2nd Lincoln Park Pilots Association Fun Fly Competition. This fly-in event is designed to promote all of the best virtues of flying: fun, knowledge, precision, and above all else, safety. In an effort to make things interesting and to give you, the contestant, a run for your money, we’ve broken down the competition into three different events. Event 1: We will provide a Cessna Skyhawk (or, equivalent) for you to preflight. The objective is for you to find as many problems relating to airworthiness common to all types of airplanes. We’re not going to tell you how many squawks there are, but we will tell you that you will earn 10 points for every squawk found. After every one has had a chance to complete this event, we’ll let you know what we did to the airplane! If you find something that we didn’t know about, we’ll add 10 points for each such occurrence. Event 2: You will get to use your noodle to solve a rather tricky twenty-five (25) question multiple choice test covering flight planning, FARs, AIM, and general aeronautical knowledge. Bring your E6B -- you're gonna need it! Each correct question will earn you 10 points. Event 3: We will provide you with the winds aloft as well as a route to fly - with a total leg distance under 100nm. The route is comprised of three legs, and you will make three landings. Using your E6B, POH, and forms that we'll provide, you will plan your flight and then fly your plan. Judges will be on the ground at each of the three airports to record your times. Your preflight calculations will be scored, as well as the accuracy of your flight times and fuel burned. Sound easy? Not to worry, there are bunch of curve balls we'll be throwing at you on the day of the flight. (Please note: as PIC, you are solely responsible for complying with all applicable FARs, especially 91.103.) Now, we really don’t want this competition to take place in a disorderly fashion, so we’ve got some ground rules that you will be expected to follow: Each team must be comprised of one or two licensed (and current) pilots. However, student pilots are highly encouraged to participate, but only with a CFI as a fully participating team member. Aircraft must have a valid registration number (N-number or equivalent), be certified with a single engine of at least 65 HP, and have an approach speed of at least 45 kts. Yes sports fans, this means that helicopters and experimental aircraft are welcome this time around! You will be expected to arrive at Lincoln Park no later than 10AM. After everyone signs in, we will hold a safety briefing for the event and we will answer any last minute questions that you might have. If you do not attend the safety briefing, you will not be permitted to participate in this event. After the safety briefing, we will begin Events 1 and 2, and they will run concurrently. Each team will be permitted up to five minutes to complete Event 1, and 45 minutes to complete Event 2. When all the answer sheets are handed in, we will pass out the flight packets for Event 3. You will have 20 minutes to complete your preflight planning, so you might want to practice this a few times before coming! We will provide the judges to evaluate your overall performance. Their decision is final. No whining. If you whine, your team will be penalized 50 points for each such occurrence. When you have completed your flying, please park your aircraft and return to the hangar. We’ll be having a short ceremony where the prizes will be awarded. If you leave, you forfeit your prize! An entry fee of $25 per team is required in order to participate. The team with the highest point score wins. First place wins $100, second place wins $50, and third place wins $25, with the rest of the money being used to feed you. Everyone else, you know your weaknesses. Brush up for the next competition, and thank you for coming. In the event of a tie, the prize for that place will be split among those winners. This event is limited to the first ten (10) teams that sign up. Minimum weather criteria are: ceiling of 4000’, visibility greater than 6sm, crosswind component less than 10 knots at all three airports, and a maximum wind speed of 20 knots.
Please remember, This Is For Fun Only. Above all else, Think Safe, Act Safe, and Fly Safe!
